He died from pneumonia, a complication of the oesophageal cancer he had, at a Texas hospital. Vanity Fair magazine, which announced his death, said there would "never be another like Christopher".

HPV tests better than Pap for cervical cancer detection

Which cancer screening is best? Amidst a variety of findings this past year, a new study in the Lancet Oncology journal found an HPV test is more effective for detecting cancer in women over 30. Researchers studied more than 45,000 women aged 29 to 56 in the Netherlands, who were given a combination of the pap test and the HPV test, or the Pap test alone.

No brakes on breast cancer cells

Scientists of the German Cancer Research Center have discovered a tiny RNA molecule, called miR-520, which at once blocks two important pathways in the development of cancer in cells. In estrogen receptor-negative breast cancer, the production of this microRNA is often reduced and this is correlated with malignant behavior of tumor cells. The DKFZ team has found out that tumors with low levels of miR-520 have a particularly strong tendency to metastasize.

Hologic's cervical cancer device gets FDA nod

Medical systems maker Hologic's said U.S. health regulators approved its device to screen for cervical cancer. The company, which makes the ThinPrep cervical cancer test and Selenia digital mammography systems, was granted marketing approval to sell its Cervista High Throughput Automation system.

Quelque 365.000 nouveaux cas de cancers ont été signalés en 2011 dans l'Hexagone, selon les estimations communiquées lors d'un colloque international, organisé dans le cadre du Plan Cancer 2009-2013 par l'Agence de sécurité sanitaire française (Anses) et l'Institut national du cancer (INCa). D'une façon générale, la mortalité par cancer tend à diminuer en France, alors que l'incidence annuelle des cas continue de progresser
